Dorothy Princess of Oz

Chapter-1 "Ozma's gift"

It was a lovely afternoon in the magnificent emerald city. The sun was shining and birds were heard singing a sweet melody. Princess Dorothy Gale was sitting in the shade of a tall oak tree growing in the garden of the royal palace. She was now a beautiful teen girl with long and darkish hair with braided pigtails and pretty blue eyes. She was wearing her favorite blue and white checkered gingham dress with long sleeves and a yoke neckline. On her feet, she wore two silk blue stockings and a pair of polished emerald dress shoes outlined with pearls and sapphire gems. On her head was a small golden crown which symbolized her rank as a ruler. She was very optimistic and wholesome, and although she was proud of her position, she never allowed it to ruin her innocent personality. She sat comfortably in the shade reading a book, with her little black dog, Toto sleeping beside her and her little pink kitten, Eureka laying in her lap. The princess was well content with her story when a young woman with big green eyes and thick curly hair approached her. She wore a pretty green silk gown, with green satin sashes and green slippers.

"Excuse me, your highness," She bowed her head addressing the girl. Toto awoke and sprang to his feet. Upon hearing her speak, Dorothy looked up. It was Princess Ozma's faithful maid, Jellia Jamb.

"Oh, Yes, Jellia?" she answered kindly.

"Ozma has requested to speak with you in her living chambers," inform the maid.

She knew when Ozma summoned her it was serious. The kitten leaped out of Dorothy's lap as she sat her book down and stood up. She then followed Jellia into the palace. It was the biggest and tallest building which sat in the center of the emerald city. Each room was filled with cozy velvet chairs, glass tables with sterling silver platters laid out which were filled with scrumptious treats, bookshelves, and wardrobes filled with gorgeous clothing. Dorothy herself had four lovely room's in this luxurious castle which consisted of a sitting room, a dressing room, a cozy bedroom, and a marble bathroom. Being Ozma's second in command she was highly respected and loved by everyone who lived in the palace. She followed Jellia jamb upstairs to Ozma's living courters. When they arrived the Jellia knocked on the door.

"Your majesty! Princess Dorothy is here," She announced.

"Send her in, Jellia," replied the ruler.

The maid opened the door and the princess and her animals entered. The room was small with two green couches, a green carpet, one large window with green curtains, a large marble dresser and hanging on the wall was a large painting with golden frames. This was Ozma's magic painting which allowed her to see everything that happened in the land of Oz. As she soon as Dorothy entered she beheld the beautiful ruler, Ozma. She was a bit taller then Dorothy. She had beautiful green eyes and glossy pink lips. All down her back floated tresses of ruddy gold locks, with a slender solid gold circlet that was entrusted with jewels confining them at the brow. Two lovely blossoms were attached on each side of her head. She wore an elegant white gown and dainty satin slippers on her feet. This girl was the great and wise ruler of the land of Oz. As a child, she was stolen by a wicked witch named Mombi who changed her into a boy and made her a slave. But after she escaped she helped Dorothy's friends liberate the emerald city of a wicked Queen named Jinjur and her army of Revolt. When Ozma returned to her true form she reclaimed her father's throne and took her place as Oz's rightful ruler. After rescuing Dorothy on the land of Ev, the two girls become very close friends and had many adventures together. She was thrilled when Dorothy came to live forever in her kingdom and generously appointed her a princess and secondary ruler.

"Welcome, Dorothy," the girl ruler welcomed her friend with a friendly hug and kiss her cheek, "How are you today?"

"I'm fine, Ozma," replied Dorothy happily," But why did you summon?"

"I asked you up here because I have a special gift for you," said the wise ruler. She walked to the dresser and picked up a small silver chest lined with pretty red, green, and blue gemstones. She then sat down on the big green couch. Next to her was a tiny little piglet with a little green top hat and emerald collar. This was Ozma's pet piglet, Patrick one of the nine tiny piglets found by the wonderful Wizard and given to her as a pet.

"Come sit with me," she requested.

Dorothy obeyed and sat down with her friend. Toto and Eureka jumped up on the couch and the piglet sat next to them. Ozma then handed Dorothy the silver chest.

"What's inside?" Dorothy asked staring curiously at the beautiful box.

"Open it and see," said Ozma smiling with anticipation.

Dorothy was very interested in seeing what this surprise Ozma had for her was. She slowly turned the little golden key in the lock and opened the lid. When she saw what was inside her eyes grew wide with amazement. In the chest was a pair of silver shoes with pointy toes and little green ribbons tied on each side of the straps. It was the very same pair of shoes Dorothy wore when she first came to Oz and had lost after she left.

"My magic shoes!" Exclaimed Dorothy in astonishment, "I thought these were lost forever."

"Yes, but I recovered them for you," said Ozma.

"How?" Dorothy asked.

"I used the magic carpet Glinda lent me when we traveled to Land of Ev to liberate the Queen and her children from Roquat the Nome king to safely traverse the deadly desert," explained the ruler, "I searched for many weeks till I finally found them. They were a bit dirty and filled with sand so I had Jellia clean out and shine them up for you."

Dorothy was amazed her friend risked her own life by going out into the great desert that surrounded the land Oz that destroys any living soul who sets foot on it just to recover these shoes for her. But Ozma was brave and willing to do anything for her beloved princess companion.

"As I'm sure you know, these shoes have incredible magic powers, Dorothy," said the ruler.

"Yes, I know," replied Dorothy, "But when I first wore them, I didn't know how powerful they were and why the wicked witch of the west wanted them so badly."

"Those shoes are one of the most powerful magical items in Oz," said Ozma. "Stronger than Glinda's Golden cap and my Magic belt. And in the wrong hands, they could bring great harm to Oz."

"Then shouldn't you wear them?" Dorothy asked handing the shoes to her. But she turned them away.

"I tried to use them but when I put them on they wouldn't work for me," said Ozma regrettably. "You destroyed their previous owner so it seems they'll only work for you. And as long you wear them they can never be used for evil purposes. So as my chosen companion, and princess of Oz, I ask that you keep them safe and use their powers to help the people of my kingdom and keep the peace."

Dorothy felt a great wave of responsibility placed upon her. At first, she wasn't sure she could do it. But she knew Ozma wouldn't have asked her if she felt she wasn't capable of handling it. And as a princess, it was her duty to uphold the law and help her friend protect the land of Oz and it's people from evil wizards and witches.

"I promise, Ozma," said Dorothy nodding her head, "To keep these shoes safe from wicked witches and sorceresses and to use their powers to help the people of Oz."

Ozma was very happy to hear this.

"I'm glad you accepted this responsibility I've given you, Princess Dorothy," said Ozma proudly, "You can wear them whenever you wish."

As soon as she said this, Dorothy placed the shoes on the floor. She stood up, slipped her green shoes off and tried the old silver ones on. Though they were made of silver, the magic they possessed made them flexible and comfortable as a feather bed. She walked around a few times trying them out.

"How are they?" Ozma asked.

"They fit just as well as they did when I first wore them," replied Dorothy, "Though I've grown a little taller the shoes change sizes to fit the person who wears them."

"You look like a proper princess in those shoes," Ozma compliment.

"Aw, thanks," Dorothy blushed a little. "What do you two think?"

The little black dog and the pink kitten stared silently at her.

"Come on, Toto, Eureka, I know you both can talk," she said folding her arms and grinning at animals. She knew very well that in the land of Oz all animals were able to speak like humans. But the dog and cat preferred not to since they never did back in Kansas. Toto wagged his tail and Eureka yawned.

"Your mistress asked your opinion, now please answer her," Ozma ordered them.

"Oink! Oink! Dorothy pretty," squealed the little piglet.

"Alright, alright!" The kitten finally spoke rolling her eyes, "You look wonderful, Dorothy."

"I think you look great no what matter what you wear," Toto spoke as well.

Satisfied, Dorothy sat back down, picked them both up and cuddled them gently.

"Thank you," she replied then turned to the ruler. "Thanks for getting my shoes back Ozma."

"Your welcome, Dorothy dear," Ozma replied happily, "Perhaps you should learn to use their powers in case something happens or you need to defend yourself."

"I suppose," Dorothy agreed, "But I don't know how they work. I do know that if I click the heels three times they'll take me anywhere I wish, but the rest is a mystery."

"Perpahs we should pay a visit to Glinda, and ask her advice," Ozma suggested, "But for now, let us go and have lunch with the wizard and your aunt and uncle."

"Alright," Dorothy agreed.

They left the room and walked through the palace together. Dorothy's silver shoes tinkled merrily on the marble floor. The dog, the cat, and the tiny piglet followed behind them. The girls chatted as they walked side by side.

"I can't believe it's been three years since you can me to live with me," said the ruler happily.

"Neither can I," said Dorothy, "If you hadn't brought us here, Aunt and Uncle Henry would be living in a retirement home and I'd probably working as a maid or a nurse."

"That's no life for a lovely girl such as you, Dorothy," said Ozma, "Especially after how you freed my kingdom of those nasty witches."

Dorothy remembered back when she first arrived in Oz. At that time, she never would have imagined that she herself would someday be one of it's great rulers. After she lost her shoes, she thought she'd never see this beautiful kingdom or her friends again. But it seemed as if she was destined to return and help Princess Ozma keep it safe from evil. Ozma herself never imagined while living as a boy named Tip in the land of the Gillikins with the witch Mombi that she was actually the rightful ruler of Oz. The girls laughed cheerfully as they strolled through the castle. Ozma enjoyed her friends company. Being a ruler was tiring and many of the girls in Oz her age whom it was proper to associate with were few and she lacked companionship. Dorothy herself was very grateful to the young ruler for everything she had given her and her aunt and uncle. She was almost like an older sister watching out for her. As they passed a hallway they noticed two painting hanging beside each other of the wall. On the left was a little Dorothy wearing her silver shoes and holding Toto in her arms. Stand beside her were the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the cowardly lion. On the right was a picture of a young boy with the scarecrow and tin man, along with a man with a pumpkin head, a wooden horse, a large magnified insect called the Wogglebug. The girls reflected on their past adventures and how either action's had brought peace and prosperity to the magical land.

"Hard to believe I was born a girl but I grew up as a boy doing chores for an old hag," laughed the ruler.

"It's good you became the ruler," said Dorothy, "Or Queen Jinjur would have destroyed my dear friend the Scarecrow."

"How is the Scarecrow?" asked Ozma.

"He's fine," replied Dorothy, "He really loves being a school teacher using his brains the wizard gave him to teach the children of your city."

"He is very wise and a clever man," said Ozma, "And how is the Emperor Nick Chopper and his Empress?"

"Nick and Nimmie are quite happy living in the winkie country," returned Dorothy, "After being apart for so long, it's nice that they're finally together again."

"I'm glad you and your friends are happy with your lives," said Ozma smiling happily.

End of chapter-1
This is the first chapter of my Oz story which takes place after the sixth book. So the other books didn't happen. Not sure if I'll continue this due to my lack or story writing and building. But At least I got something done. I always felt after the Dorothy lost her shoes she wasn't the same character from the book anymore. I also made her more like her original self instead of that blonde girl while dress wearing girl. Hope you all liked this.
